Measurement of femoral AP
There are two methods to measure femur, the anterior reference method andthe posterior reference method. The advantages of the anterior referencemethod: Avoid the Notching phenomenon caused by excessive osteotomy in theanterior condyle of the femoral condyle, so as to better reconstructpatellofemoral joint. Advantages of the posterior reference method: It mostreliable to restore the joint line in flexion position, to ensure the balance offlexion and extension space, and to reduce the relaxation of moderate flexion.
The size and shape of femur are closely related to sex, body size, race and soon. The the medio-lateral (ML) size of femur in Asians is much larger than thatof the antero-posterior (AP) size. When choosing the size of femoral prosthesis,a small one should be chosen to avoid overcovering the joint. Any side of metalfemoral condylar prosthesis with protruding bone margin on either side canreduce the slip of quadriceps femoris and cause discomfort of articular capsule.
When choosing between two adjacent models of femoral condyle prosthesis, theAP value of the femoral condylar prosthesis provided by most manufacturers is4-5mm one interval. As a result, if a smaller prosthesis is selected, additionalmultiple osteotomy from the anterior femoral condyle and the posterior condylemust be 2-2.5mm. The joint line is raised 2-2. 5 mm, which leads to relaxationduring knee joint flexion. Thus leads to relaxation during flexion of knee joint.
